To the Parents of children in Mrs. Cody's class,
Each year, I am surprised by how quickly these 40 weeks of school go by, and this year is no exception!
All of the children in our class learned so much and grew and matured throughout the course of the year. I am so proud of all of their accomplishments and hard work.
Thank-you for letting me spend each day with your child!
To the Students in Mrs. Cody's class:
I am so proud of each and every one of you. The biggest and best lesson I have tried to teach you in Third Grade is to never give up and persist when things are challenging. This is the best way to learn and grow. One of my favorite quotes is: "If you aren't confused, you aren't learning!" Never give up on yourself. You can accomplish anything you set your mind to and try your best at.
It is crucial that you keep your mind working in the summer!!! Your brain is a muscle and it will get weaker- just like your arm muscles- if you aren't using it.
There are so many ways you can do this! You can:
-Complete your summer reading packet and math calendar- both came home from school on Thursday. You will get a special penguin point gift card from your 4th grade teacher if you do.
-Join the White Oak Library summer reading program!!! They always have lots of cool prizes- and tons of great book recommendations for your reading level.
-Play lots of online math games, from right here on my blog! You may also be able to continue using splash math.
-Try keeping a summer writing journal, or try to do all of the prompts in the June calendar across the summer. You have tons of space left in your school journals to use up!
-Complete your math homework workbook to keep your math skills sharp!
-If you didn't master all of your multiplication facts, practice, practice, practice! If you did, keep playing games so your don't forget any of those though facts!
And, of course, don't forget to have fun!!! Enjoy time with your friends and family and spend lots of time playing outside and being active!
I'm going to miss each and every one of you! Enjoy a wonderful and safe summer!

Keep 'em Thinking!!!
Spring is in the air and it is time to get the kids outside and spend time being active!
Try during Spring Break to find ways to keep your brain thinking even though you aren't in school.
-Read a good book or two- all of those reading minutes count for our Page Read-A-Thon! Our class is currently in first place for having the most minutes read in the whole school :)
-Practice your multiplication facts! I can't wait to see who the first third graders to earn their 0-10's medals this year will be. Study up! You can also visit all of the different math sites through my blog so you keep working on those skills.
-Have a "Genius Hour" and research any topic that interests you! Teach our class something new when you get back to class.
-Going on a cool trip? Keep a journal while away and be ready to share some of your experiences with the class when you return!
-Work on your book report project, due on April 8!
-Try some neat science experiements! You can find so many online to try out. If you find a good one, be sure to share it with Mrs. Cody!

Black History Month Project!

Remember, the final project is due on February 26, 2016. There will be no additional paper homework or spelling assignments during this week. Reading each night is still (and always!) required!
The parade is during our special assembly, Monday, February 29 at 2pm.

Things to do to keep your brain busy!!!
Hi Everybody,
I miss you guys! I can't believe we've been out of school for a whole week and we won't see each other until Monday!!! I hope all of you had tons of fun playing in the snow and staying cozy inside.
I was sad to log in to Learn2Earn (Whooo's Reading) and see that very few of you are logging reading minutes right now- when I check it out on Monday at school, I expect to see lots of minutes logged by everyone! You should be reading for more than 20 minutes on days off from school. Keep your brain fit and in shape!
While you are enjoying your time off, remember to find time to study you multiplication facts and play some of the multiplication and division facts games here on my blog. You can also complete you Xtramath lesson to continue to work towards earning your next certificate!

The Importance of Math Discourse
Each week, our math lessons are infused with math talk- kids buddy up to talk out strategies for solving math problems and work to solve them together in a variety of ways- students do this in small math groups, during whole groups lessons and during center time as well.
Today students worked together to solve some challenging problems with "torn shapes"- rectangles and rectilinear figures with pieces missing where students were asked to figure out the area of the whole shape. They did an excellent job collaborating and problem solving!
Math Discourse helps students to learn new strategies and think of math in new ways and improves their ability to explain their thinking. This is crucial to having a deeper understanding of mathematics!
You can see the problem they were working to solve here. Consider working together over winter break to solve some problems from the nRich website with your child!

Our "Hour of Code" in Science!!!
This week, all Grade 3 students participated in the Hour of Code program put on by code.org.
Students did an amazing job and remained engaged for an entire hour of learning to code for video game and design purposes! It was really great to see how excited the kids were by these activities! Ask your child to show you some of them at home and please give them an opportunity to continue to explore all of these amazing resources!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!
I am so thankful for all of my students and how they come to school each day with a positive attitude, ready to help their classmates and excited to learn!!!
Across the past few weeks, we've been doing a lot! We are beginning to memorize our times tables and have been doing some different fun activities to learn them all!
Here, a students is using their multiplication facts to color in a Fall scarecrow picture!
While we work on these new hard facts, students continue daily practice of addition and subtraction facts so they maintain their speed and accuracy- here Gabby is practicing her facts on XtraMath.org! Log in to check your child's progress today!!!
We have been doing Readers' Theatre in reading groups and the kids love it! It is very engaging for kids because they get to act out their assigned parts and they learn to follow others readers and read with expression. Here are some of our reading groups practicing their plays together- the plays included "Where the Wild Things Are", "Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie" and "The Hidden One" (a Native American Folktale).

Preparing for Conferences
As we all prepare for conferences across the next two days, I look forward to meeting with all parents and guardians and sharing important information about the students' progress. Attached are some helpful blog posts I've written in previous years- this one discusses strategies and resources to help your child at home if they are struggling. This one also gives a lot of tips and resources from the county.
Conferences are tough because we only have 2 half days to meet with all parents. Please feel free to contact me to set up more time to talk if you do not get to share everything and get all of your questions answered in the 15 minutes provided.
This year, we are having a special "Math and Reading Night" to give parents and kids some fun and interactive things they can be doing at home to help their child succeed here at school. It is next Wednesday, November 18. Pizza will be served at 6:30 pm and the free event for parents and kids begins at 7 pm.

Fall Festival!!!
We all had a great time last week wrapping up Marking Period 1 and celebrating the Fall Festival on Friday afternoon.
Many students' project were outstanding and we all enjoyed having each and every member of our class come up and tell us all about their community service experience. Many in and out of school projects are now displayed in the hallway outside of our classroom! Check them out when you come in next week for conferences!
Thank-you to Mrs. Mir, Mrs. Vazquez and Mrs. Rosa who all came in and helped out with our successful Fall Festival. We played Autumn BINGO, created cool leaf print with a marble effect, enjoyed some treats and finally some team games and dancing! It was a great time!
Each week, I am taking the time to check out Learn2Earn, with all of the kids, and reward students who are reading! This week, 6 students earned certificates for a free personal pizza from Pizza Hut. Students are expected to read for 100 minutes each night and answer 4 questions (or prompts) about their writing. If your child does not have access to the Internet, they should be logging their reading on a reading chart and answering 4 prompts per week in their (purple) Spelling/Reading Notebook. Please ensure your child reads each and everyday and let me know if you need assistance in understanding these assignments!

STEM In and Out of School
As you have probably noticed your child now receives a grade for "Engineering and Technology" every marking period in science. We are constantly examining how things work and how scientists improve on existing inventions and technologies. This will especially be a big focus in Marking Period 2.
This marking period, your child worked in a group in science to build a basic vehicle. Next week, they will design a wheel covering for their vehicle to meet a certain need- maybe as a parade float or a baby stroller, for example. This is a culminating activity after this marking period of examining forces of motion, speed, friction and texture and how all of these concepts go together. Here are some photos of our class working on their basic vehicles together- all Mrs. Cody did was power the hot glue gun- the rest was 100% done by the students.

STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) instruction is so important to prepare our kids for 21st century jobs and the kids LOVE it. At school, we are limited by the constraints of time, money and safety to doing as many STEM projects as I would like.
